The Aquae Foundation obtains the triple seal of the Ministry of Ecological Transition thanks to the Sembrando Oxygen project in which Aquona participates

Fundación Aquae, the Aquona foundation, has just received the triple seal ‘Calculo + Reduzco + Compensa’, awarded by the Spanish Office for Climate Change (OECC) of the Ministry of Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO). Aquae thus becomes the only foundation in Spain to have this triple distinctive this year, which reflects its commitment to sustainable development.

This triple seal certifies that Aquae has calculated its carbon footprint for the activities it has developed in Spain during 2019; it has reduced its emissions of Greenhouse Gases (GHG) during that year for scope 1 (direct emissions) and scope 2 (indirect emissions); and finally, it has offset 70.18% of its 2019 carbon footprint (2 tons of CO2).

Since 2014 Aquae has offset a large part of its emissions of this gas thanks to the reforestation work carried out through the ‘Sembrando Oxygen’ project. Zamora is one of the main cities where the initiative has been developed, thanks to the collaboration of Aquona and the Zamora City Council. Specifically, plantations were made on the Valderrey farm, the La Candelada area and the Valorio park in the capital of Zamora. Reforestation actions were also carried out in other Spanish cities and municipalities such as Pego or Vall D'Ebo, both in Alicante.

The objective of ‘Sembrando Oxygen’ is to reduce CO2 emissions into the atmosphere through the planting and planting of trees in areas that have suffered a fire or suffer loss of forest mass. Since its creation, about 12,000 trees have already been planted that will eliminate more than 750 tons of CO2 in the next 40 years.

These plantations are carried out by the Sylvestris Group, an expert social company in forest plantations and plantings, which employs people at risk of social exclusion selected by the town councils of the regions in which it operates.

Furthermore, Fundación Aquae, firmly committed to complying with SDG 13 (adopt urgent measures to combat climate change and its effects), is the first private foundation in Spain to calculate its carbon footprint for six consecutive years.

The Registry of Carbon Footprint, Compensation and Carbon Dioxide Absorption Projects, in which 1,281 organizations in Spain are currently registered voluntarily, consists of three sections: section on carbon footprint and commitments to reduce gas emissions greenhouse effect; CO2 absorption projects section; and carbon footprint compensation section.
